Extending its sympathies to the millions of people affected by supertyphoon Yolanda that ravaged provinces in Visayas, Mindanao and some parts of Southern Luzon, the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) called for its members all over  the country that are not affected by the typhoon to mobilize support and relief operations for the victims of supertyphoon Yolanda.

“ We called on the people in the areas least affected by the storm to extend maximum possible help to the people who are  in most need of emergency assistance,” CPP said in their statement.

The group also called for international support to generate emergency supplies and funds for rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts.

Considered to be the strongest and powerful storm to hit the country over the past 30 years, tropical storm Yolanda (International name: Haiyan) left over a hundred people dead in Leyte alone based on media reports. Widespread damage to both public and private properties were also reported.

The CPP said that among the areas devastated by the strong winds are their base areas, “ within the scope of the provisional revolutionary government, and in the areas of operation of the New People’s Army and other revolutionary mass organizations,” the group said.

The CPP further said that many areas ravaged by the typhoon were those recently hit by powerful earthquakes, and most victims are from marginalized sectors. “These areas are among the most impoverished in the entire country, where the majority are poor peasants, unemployed farm workers, small fisherfolks and indigenous peoples,” said the CPP.

“They have long been abandoned by the reactionary government and will not be among its priorities for assistance,” the CPP added.
