An estimated 10 million Filipinos in Visayas and parts of Mindanao at Luzon were affected by the storm Yolanda (Haiyan). Thousands were killed and many remain unaccounted for. By all indications, this is the worst disaster crisis the nation has faced. And it is only getting worse. Even with government, media and international aid agencies conducting relief missions, only a fraction of those in need of help have been reached. Non-government and people’s organizations have stepped up to augment relief efforts. Many of these community-based groups are themselves victims of the calamity.
