The Pandayang Lino Brocka is a yearly exhibition of audio-visual works gathered from independent filmmakers across the country. As a tribute to internationally acclaimed filmmaker Lino Brocka – who depicted the plight of the oppressed in his films Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang, Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag, Insiang, Bayan Ko, Kapit sa Patalim, Orapronobis, and many others – the festival is a gathering that aims to prompt the critical and progressive consciousness of its audience.

This year’s Pandayang Lino Brocka seeks films on ‘liberation’ that will arouse the people into discourse that will serve as a weapon to arm them in action.

Liberation, through the camera’s lens, can be shot in different frames. Liberation is the successful strike waged by a labor union demanding higher pay and work benefits. Liberation is the cultivation of land by peasants in the face of the landlord’s schemes to buy off the hacienda to big businesses. Liberation is the bravery of an OFW mother who had come so close to an unwarranted death, but still chose to be steadfast in proving her innocence. Liberation is the muted voice that found its place in countless other voices struggling to shout out one word that has been made alien by those who silenced them. That word is freedom.

Lino Brocka was a visionary of freedom. He did not only dream of a Philippines liberated from the claws of the oppressors, but he sought it through his political films. To continue the path trailblazed by the filmmaker, Tudla Productions Inc., an alternative, non-profit group of filmmakers, students and cultural workers, has taken up the reins of organizing the event since 2009.

Since its inception, the festival has spearheaded political film production and distribution in the country, following Brocka’s belief that films and politics cannot be dissociated. The festival is a manifestation of Brocka’s challenge to make films that will “hurt, films that will disturb, films that will not make you rest”.

Tudla Productions, Inc. will launch The 7th Pandayang Lino Brocka Political Film and New Media Festival on August 27, 2015.

The festival does not end after a one-time screening in the University of the Philippines. Following its, the screened works will also be brought to universities, workplaces, urban poor and peasant communities.

As a festival of the arts, the Pandayang Lino Brocka does not aim to be merely a display of works. It strives to become a vehicle for socio-cultural reflection and an ideological weapon to liberate the minds of the people.
