This year’s One Billion Rising — the global campaign to rid the world of all forms of violence against women — is dubbed as “an escalation”. This is because a year after the campaign began, and however successful the awareness raising have been, various forms of violence continue to escalate throughout the world. In the Philippines, violence against women primarily takes the form of economic violence: intensifying poverty and oppression, government neglect and its abandonment of social services, environmental violence, and many others that go hand-in-hand with the culture of impunity that primarily victimize women and children.

It is in this light that the One Billion Rising for Justice — as it is called this year — aims to bring the dance protests in the very spaces where oppression and injustice happen for many women. In the Philippines, the “risings” have been happening in schools, factories, farm lands, the House of Representatives, government agencies, and of course, in front of the presidential palace of Malacanang. And although it is a nationwide and year-long campaign, today, February 14, 2014, will be a culmination of the campaign, and will feature large mobilization of women and men–dancing and protesting against all forms of violence against women. In Manila, Philippines, it takes place in front of Malacanang in the morning and in front of the National Housing Authority and University of the Philippines-Diliman in the afternoon until evening. Meanwhile, different “risings” are also happening across the country.

The One Billion Rising for Justice is led in the Philippines by Gabriela, Gabriela Women’s Party and New Voice Company. Globally, it is spearheaded by Eve Ensler and the V-Day Movement.

The whole-day live streaming event is brought to you by One Billion Rising Philippines, and in cooperation with PinoyMedia Center.

The event is also streamed live at the One Billion Rising website. Risings of other countries can also be viewed there.
