Pope Francis has often been referred to as a “People’s Pope” for his avowed affinity with the struggling poor and dispossessed of the world. In his state and pastoral visit to the Philippines, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church is once again asked by many sectors to speak in behalf of the people and their concerns. Workers and peasant groups, as well as that of youth, indigenous people, women, urban poor, teachers, government employees, health workers, migrants and many others, have campaigned for their issues to be heard by the Pope. Many have also asked that Francis also speak against rampant corruption and greed within the current Philippine administration. Meanwhile, political prisoners have launched a fast to bring attention to their plight and to the need for peace negotiations between the government and revolutionary forces to prosper. All these concerns are brought forth amid tight security preparations by the Aquino government.
This will be Pinoy Weekly’s focus in covering the Papal Visit: the progressive Pope and his response to people’s issues raised during his visit. Follow our live updates on via Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
