World-renowned author of The Vagina Monologues and women’s rights activist Eve Ensler visited the Philippines this December 2012 to witness the developments in the grassroots campaign to end violence against women.

She visited provinces and urban poor communities in Metro Manila, where she witnessed in Payatas, Quezon City the “marrying of capitalism and sexism” — the privatization of garbage collection and social services and increased incidences of various forms of violence against impoverished women.

Ensler said she is “in love with Gabriela”, the militant women’s organization spearheading One Billion Rising in the Philippines, together with Gabriela Women’s Party and Monique Wilson’s New Voice Company.

Conceptualized by Ensler, the One Billion Rising is a global campaign to pressure governments and institutions to put an end to various forms of violence against women. The campaign, which primarily involves dance as protest action, will culminate on February 14, 2013, when a targeted 1 billion women and men will dance all around the world.
